| The Promise |

The birds had scantly noticed As I hanged above their nest, Which they built of moss and leaf For their young to take their rest.
I was no ugly duckling When the squirrels laughed at me And threw me paw to paw Beneath my parent tree.
But I'll remember fondly, All their laughter, all their jokes, Though an acorn when they knew me, I shall be great amongst the oaks!
