| The Penny-Whistle |
|
I made a Penny-Whistle From a piece of Merlin wood And thought to play a spell or two Just the way magicians do Of anything I could.
I blew my Penny-Whistle To compose my harmonies; But one tune only would it play From its notes it would not stray Though I begged it on my knees
Though a hundred times I played Not by reason nor by chance Did the instrument ever play Any other song or lay Than the Merry Magician’s Dance
From Zanzibar to Paris It was hummed by everyone Though when they heard it in Eilat They said that it was ‘slightly flat But still a lot of fun’.
They heard it in New Guinea From a copy made in Spain, And all the Latins sing it too Though not I hear in Peru Where they pipe its short refrain.
China thought it quite a laugh The Japanese a joke America it took by storm Which over there is quite the norm Amongst the music folk
And when at last I lost it And knew I would never hear The pizzicato rhythms of A Penny Whistle filled with love I had to shed a tear. |
